The Most Effective Form of Free Ezine Advertising

    September 28th, 2009

Some ezine publishers offer free ezine ads to their subscribers. The bigger the readership of such ezine, the more ads – which means the less chances for your own ad to be noticed in a sea of advertisements. The smaller the readership, the less potential prospects for you. Conclusion? This model cannot be the most effective form of free ezine advertising … We have to find out something else …

The problem with the model I just described is that everyone can follow that path. Why? Because it’s free and you don’t need special skills or knowledge. Consequence? A fierce competition – your ad is competing with many other ads.

There is one little fact that most of the online newcomers overlook: the best things in the world are not those that everyone can easily get…

You have been warned! If you’re still looking for free ezine advertising, let’s see if the most effective form is for you … Here is what you’re supposed to do …

Step 1 – Decide what product or service you want to promote and search for ezines from the same niche. For example, if you want to promote a weight loss product, search for health ezines (newsletters).

Step 2 – That’s the most difficult part – Write an article on the same topic like your product (which is also the topic of the ezines you already selected). End your article with your name (or a pen name) and a P.S. (post scriptum). That P.S. has to be your ad – don’t talk there about you and don’t make it sounds like an advert. The best ads don’t sound like ads.

Step 3 – Submit the articles to the publishers. You’ll find out that some ezine publishers won’t accept guest articles (remove them from your list). Other publishers won’t like your article. However, if your list has a reasonable number of ezines, there will also be publishers who will accept your article and will publish it in their ezines. Psychological tip: subscribe to the ezines before submitting the article. Why? It is a little bit more difficult for a publisher to refuse a subscriber than a complete stranger.

That’s the most effective form of free ezine advertising. An issue of an ezine has very few articles (sometimes only one article) – which means less competition – and the most important part is this one: the subscribers didn’t subscribe to a certain ezine for the purpose of reading ads but for reading good pieces of information (including useful articles). This is free, targeted and effective ezine advertising. You cannot ask for more!

Boost the Open Rates of Your Solo Ads with Emotional Headlines

    September 21st, 2009

Solo ads that are just advertisements don’t get good results. Why? The average Joe doesn’t like ads but entertainment and related things. Today’s article reveals how emotional copywriting can help you boost the open rates of your solo adverts.

David Ogilvy – known as the Father of Advertising – said,

“On the average, five times as many people read the headline as read the body copy. When you have written your headline, you have spent eighty cents out of your dollar.”

What is the simple conclusion that any email marketer should draw? Focus on the subject line of your ad because that is a key point for the success of your solo advertising campaign.

One of the winning strategies for grabbing readers’ attention and making them open your emails is writing emotional headlines. Warning: it’s not very easy to create a desired (by you) emotion and if you don’t take care you can create an opposite reaction. Actually there is a type of marketing where the marketer knows that the message will create opposite reactions to a lot of readers. It is called “insult marketing”, it is successful for some people but I don’t recommend you to try it. It is very risky and anyway I doubt that many publishers will accept such type of ads.

Now let’s get back on track and look for another type of emotions: the positive emotions. When you succeed to create such emotions, you’re one step forward and you don’t risk negative reactions (like someone trying to create a closer relationship between his punch and your nose, or even a trial).

Example of positive emotions: hope, happiness, enthusiasm, joy. Another feeling that can help you boost the open rate is “surprise”. Make the readers ask themselves, “Whaaat?” and they will open the solo ad in order to find out more and satisfy their curiosity. Combine more such emotions (example: joy & surprise) and the result of your email marketing campaign is guaranteed!

The Best Directory of Ezines is …

    September 14th, 2009

Many ezine advertisers are looking for directories of ezines. Why? Because they think that they can find all the information they need in one single place and they won’t waste too much time finding an appropriate offer for their ezine advertising needs.

In theory, this is a good approach. Practice is different though …

I used to run a directory of ezines and I have been an ezine publisher since 2001. Based on this experience, let me share with you seven FACTS that led me to a conclusion some people won’t like

    1. Usually ezines directories owners don’t send publishers update requests. Period. The result? Most of the ezines info listed in ezines directories … is outdated.

    2. Sometimes some of the owners do send update requests. However, for various reasons, many ezine publishers don’t respond to such requests. Many directory owners don’t remove such ezines from their directory. Why? I don’t know exactly but maybe because the directory becomes a small one, and no one will be interested in it. Unfortunately the same happens with most of today’s ezine ad co-ops.

    3. Other ezine publishers change their email address listed in public places (due to spam) or slightly update the prices of their advertising packages or the subscribers’ count. Minor changes that most of the time are forgotten after a while. Then … Directory owner: “Any change?” Ezine publisher: “No change, everything is just fine.”

What happens when an advertiser checks the directory listing and sends an inquiry to a publisher who changed in the meantime her/his email address? If the advertiser is lucky, the message comes back undelivered. In other cases, the advertiser waits, waits, waits, and nothing happens.

    4. There are ezines directories where as an ezine publisher you cannot update your info. There are no online forms for submitting updates, the directory owner doesn’t respond to emails or her/his email address bounces.

    5. An ezine publisher updates her or his website and then, if she/he is not busy, if she/he remembers, if she/he can do it, only then she/he tries to update a THIRD PARTY listing. There are many if’s as you can notice.

    6. As an ezine publisher, there is NO POINT in updating some listings from some directories. Why? Some weeks after submitting an ezine, the publisher notices that many ezines directories sent a very small amount of traffic or no traffic at all. Why waste the time updating such listings?

    7. Some ezine publishers stop publishing their ezines. Some of them never bother to update (delete) their third party listings. Other publishers died (R.I.P.), and they are still listed in many places.

Conclusion: you cannot rely on the info posted on third party sites. The most updated listing for an ezine is the ezine’s own website.

The following question can be raised: What is the easiest and cheapest way to find ezines’ websites?

Yep, it’s right under your nose! The best directory of ezines is GOOGLE. Google is the ezine advertiser’s best friend. Combining the proper keywords when searching, you’ll quickly find  a list of ezines sites where you can continue your research until you find the best ezine advertising offer for your needs and budget.
